The High Desert

Another day dawning, you hit the ground yawning,

There’s so much in need of repair.

You aren’t sure what comes after, it might involve laughter,

It might involve loss of despair.

Sunken eyes greet you, half red and half deep blue,

  You barely remember your name.

Crushed by the jaws of emotion, a lingering devotion

To memories that only bring pain.

High in the desert, nobody gets hurt,

    ‘Cause everything’s just a mirage.

You wonder where do you go now, don’t really know how

    You even survived love’s barrage.

Now there is nothing worth feeling, head is still reeling,

Flash on the truth now and then.

You know your destiny calls you, mostly appalls you,

Get up and do it again.

Call it a bad joke, half mirror and half smoke,

Your senses play tricks on your mind.

You’re pretty sure what comes after, you’ve run out of laughter,

With dread you know what you will find.

Soon you start drinking, the sun is fast sinking,

You can’t feel the earth anymore.

You’ve come way past mere confusion, disdained disillusion,

You’re crawling alone on the floor.
